Classes information;

On every class, you will learn basic forge safety, proper hammer and forging technique and how to optimise these techniques with proper body mechanics to quickly improve your proficiency.

The full day Bladesmithing class usually aims to cover the forging of an iron age style knife from mild steel, however the class can adapt to a variety of blade types and designs depending on the students ability and experience. In essence we find a balance between what is achievable based on the individual, and their expectations. It is a good idea to bring designs.

All classes are one to one tuition; you will have my full attention, with instruction to match your learning style, whether that is by drawing the steps required, explaining them and why they work, showing different ways of achieving the same result, and demonstrating the techniques step by step. I usually craft the same item alongside the student so that at every step they have a clear idea of what they should be doing to capture the shapes they want.

The skills you will learn on these classes are a great investment in yourself if crafting is something you are passionate about. For those who only want an experience, Blacksmithing is a profound and primordial one that won't be soon forgotten.

 Mountain King Forge is a working forge Museum, there are very few power tools on site, so most things are done by hand. Please bear in mind that this is a traditional skills class and not somewhere with the latest high tech equipment. There are an abundance of hand tools to use and guidance on how to use them throughout the day. The emphasis in all of my classes is the techniques.

What makes my class different to other classes available?                                                                                  A one to one class is far more intensive than a class where there are 15 other students competing for the instructor's time or to use equipment. One to one tuition means that I can asses the ways that you learn best and adapt the way I teach to suit you. I will also monitor and improve your forging technique throughout the day.                                                                                                                                                        As my classes focus on using hand tools, it provides beginner smiths with the skills to achieve a finished product without investing a fortune on power tools and specialist equipment. Working with just hand tools also allows you to form a strong connection with the item you are creating.

The classes are held at the Smithy in Ashbourne, the address can be found on the contact page. Safety equipment is provided for all classes. Non flammable clothing and sturdy work boots are required for all classes.

Accomodation and food are not provided. Hot and cold drinks are provided.

All classes can be booked online by emailing me at  mknaught_3@hotmail.com
